“A disarmingly poetic – and specifically female – vision of adolescence that it belongs in a category of its own.”
— Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times
Moscow Film Society presents THE VIRGIN SUICIDES as part of their Her Lens series featuring female directors! Sofia Coppola’s debut film, an adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s acclaimed novel, The Virgin Suicides captures the ineffable melancholy of teenage longing and ennui. It portrays the suicides of the Lisbon sisters stifled by overprotective religious parents, narrated through the collective memories of men who were boys at the time and still seek understanding. Set in 1970s suburbia, the film evokes this era through ethereal cinematography by Ed Lachman and an atmospheric score by Air. This movie not only secured Coppola’s place in American independent cinema but also became a significant coming-of-age touchstone anchored by Kirsten Dunst’s incredible performance. Sponsored by University of Idaho Women’s Center.
